CELEBRATE LIFE, CONTEMPLATE DEATH

CELEBRATE LIFE, CONTEMPLATE DEATH

I remember those that have passed
Family, friends, people close and dear
Who never wished to check out so fast
But were by implacable fate dispatched.

I remember my good father and mother
My beloved sisters and loving brothers
Nephews, nieces who were younger
Who I won’t see here again and forever.

I remember them in my river of tears
On this day of joy, cheers and laughter
Birthdays remind me my end is nearer
Amidst merrymaking I must be sober.

Short, long, human life is terminal
Longevity, if achieved, is not eternal
Be death caused, forced or natural
Sure, certain is it’s stubborn arrival.

Before we today cut this sweet cake
Let’s ponder the lonely, airless grave
As we sing, pray, and share the Grace
Our earthly race let us truthfully rate.

While we blow the party’s trumpet
Let us remember the burial casket
While we raise glasses for the toast
Let’s imagine the sturdy, lowering rope.
