In one of the most astonishing medical discoveries in recent times, doctors in Colombia have found that an 82-year-old woman had been carrying a calcified fetus inside her abdomen for over four decades.
The woman, identified only as Maria, had visited the hospital complaining of persistent abdominal pain. Physicians initially suspected gallstones or other digestive complications, but a CT scan revealed something completely unexpected — a “stone baby,” a rare condition medically known as lithopedion.
A lithopedion occurs when a fetus develops outside the uterus (an abdominal pregnancy) and later dies. Unable to be reabsorbed or expelled, the body naturally calcifies the fetus to protect itself from infection — effectively turning it into stone.
Medical experts note that fewer than 300 cases of lithopedion have been documented globally. What makes Maria’s case even more remarkable is that the calcified fetus remained undetected for more than 40 years, only discovered after she began experiencing discomfort late in life.
Doctors described the case as “a rare and fascinating example of the human body’s extraordinary ability to adapt and protect itself,” adding that it offers deeper insight into the mysteries of human biology.
