Funmilayo Adesanya Salutes Nigerians on Democracy Day, Acknowledges Vice-President’s roles over Senate Leadership
Re: Worst Southern Christian Better Than Righteous Northern Muslim – Kashim Shettima
Happy Democracy Day celebration to Nigerians, 2023 – Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies
A former Presidential Candidate and frontline Female politician Prof. Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies while wishing Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day celebration has applauded the resolute decision of Vice President Kashim Shettima to persuade the incoming senators to allow a Southern Christian to emerge as the next Senate President.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, today 12th June 2023 as Nigerians celebrate Democracy Day, Adesanya-Davies said, she gives kudos to Vice President Kashim Shettima for his decision regarding Southern Christian Senate Presidency, unlike the case of Nasir El-rufai’s controversial provocative statements about the role of religion in Kaduna governorship and the nation, which has generated outrage remarks, especially on the social media all week.
“As the race for the Senate Presidency hots up, Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the most incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim.
Shettima said, “he is ready to kneel and beg the incoming senators to allow a Southern Christian to emerge as the next Senate President. He spoke during an interaction with the senators in Abuja.
According to Shettima: “I’m ready to kneel and beg my colleagues for the sake of the nation. This is for the survival of this nation.
“Here we are with a Muslim president and a Muslim vice-president in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious polity like ours.
“Number 1, 2. All of the same faith for God’s sake!
“Under the current dispensation, the worst, the most incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim for the Presidency of the Senate,” he added.
Adesanya-Davies added, “We would recall that Kashim Shettima has re-echoed several times that, there is ‘No plan to Islamise Nigeria’. He has been consistent in reassuring Nigerians and the nation, that their governance is never about any religion but about the Nigerian nation.
In a report by Anthony Ailemen on May 27, 2023, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former governor of Borno State and now the Vice President says his emergence for the role is a ‘child of necessity’ and not any plan to Islamise Nigeria.
The Vice-president has debunked fears that the administration of Bola Tinubu, the president-elect would be predicated on the Islamisation of the country at the inauguration lecture on Saturday.
He reassures, “If Tinubu who is married to a Christian and pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church did not Islamise his own house, how can he be accused of planning to Islamise the country?” Shettima who stood in for the president-elect at the event said.
The banker-turned-politician who was governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019 reiterated that President Muhammadu Buhari conducted the freest election in the country, during the just concluded general elections.
Shettima reiterated at the event that the Tinubu-administration will address the issues of fuel subsidy and dual interest rates, heavily criticized for fueling corruption under the outgoing administration of President Buhari.
The Vice President revealed that he deliberately appointed an Igbo man and a practising Catholic as his Aid De Camp (ADC), while his Chief Security Detail, is also a Christian.
“So, he the so-called Boko Haram sponsor will now be protected by Christians,” he said.
He noted that there is no perfect democracy, but assured that Tinubu’s dispensation will strive to meet the expectations of Nigerians.
“A vice president is as good as his loyalty to his principal,” he said at the event which had the former president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta as a guest speaker.
“Let the sense of our jubilation be paused, instead, for now, is not the time to revel in the enchantment of triumph, instead, let us come together and recognize the reality that has afflicted our nation and move from strength to strength.
Adesanya-Davies says the truth, Vice President Kashim Shettima has been trying his best to reassure us. He and President Bola Tinubu should as such be given the benefit of the doubt about the said APC-Islamisation Agenda.
Prof. Adesanya-Davies however decries the current spates of kidnappings and killings of the Christians especially in Northern Nigeria which she said need very urgent attention and would have to stop while they promise and while we celebrate Democracy Day.
Adding that, nothing remarkable has been said and done since President Bola Tinubu and
Vice President Kashim Shettima took the Oath of Office, and have been inaugurated as Nigeria’s 16th President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on Monday, 29th May, 2023 and has since assumed office.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fulfil his promises to the Catholic Bishop’s religious harmony and unity of the country.
“Finally, I wish all Nigerians a happy Democracy Day celebrations and pray that the Almighty God would let the light of freedom and liberty continue to shine in our nation, Nigeria. Thank you and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” – Funmilayo Adesanya-Davies
