Lagos Police Command Refund N150,000 Extorted from MAPOLY Student

The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday confirmed that the N150,000 hostel fee extorted from a student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Sanni Faruk, by policemen attached to the Meiran Police Division in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state has been refunded.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development via his Twitter handle, said the indicted policemen had been summoned to the police headquarters.
Hundeyin wrote, “All officers involved in this extortion have been identified and summoned to the state headquarters.
“They are ASP Kehinde Otunaya, Inspector Obi Emmanuel, Inspector Ugwuoke Christopher, Inspector Iriekpen Edekin and Inspector Isah Jubril. Further updates will be provided.”
When contacted, Hundeyin further confirmed that the money had been refunded to the student.
Faruk had accused the policemen of accosting him on his way to school after which he was arrested.
The student said he was heading to school from home on Sunday, February 12, when the officers stopped the bus he was travelling in at the Abule Egba area of the community. He said the policemen asked him to alight and searched him.
Faruk, however, confirmed that the money had been refunded as promised by the Division Police Officer, SP Toyosi Shokunbi.
“The money has been refunded and I have received the alert,” he said.
Meanwhile, the South West coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Olatunji Adejuwon, in an interview, has demanded the prosecution of the officers.
He said, “What they did was very wrong. The officers should be investigated and be made to face the wrath of the law to make it serve as a deterrent to others. The matter was reported to me and I spoke to the DPO.
“This has become a regular trend and it affects not just the students but the youth generally. We have had a series of cases whereby the money was refunded. We also thought the trend had declined, but it seemed to have taken a new dimension.”
