NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake Postinor-2 in Circulation

NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Fake Postinor-2 in Circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised alarm over the circulation of falsified batches of Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel 0.75mg) in Nigeria, warning the public of the serious health risks associated with the counterfeit contraceptive.

According to the agency, reports from the product’s Marketing Authorisation Holder confirmed that the suspect batches currently in circulation were never imported into the country.

NAFDAC disclosed that the counterfeit packs can be identified through distinct packaging errors. The fake product’s PIN verification sticker appears in a smaller font size and contains a spelling error, with the word “Verify” wrongly spelt as “Veify.” Additionally, the counterfeit version incorrectly prints “Distnibuted in Nigeria,” further distinguishing it from the genuine product.

The agency warned that falsified Postinor-2 may contain harmful or substandard ingredients, incorrect dosages of levonorgestrel, or toxic contaminants. Such risks could lead to contraceptive failure, unpredictable side effects, long-term reproductive complications, or even death.

Consumers are strongly advised to purchase Postinor-2 only from licensed pharmacies and verified healthcare providers. Healthcare professionals and members of the public have been urged to report suspected cases of substandard or falsified medicines to the nearest NAFDAC office, call the agency’s toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or email sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
