Nigerian Lawmakers Propose Five Years Jail For Protesters

A bill proposing a five-year jail term for unlawful protesters in the country has scaled through first reading at the House of Representatives.

The Bill entitled: ‘An Act To Amend The Criminal Code ACT, CAP 38, Laws Of The Federation Of Nigeria, 2004 To Further Preserve The Sanctity Of Human Life And Property, And To Provide Specifically For Mob Action, Prescribe Punishment And Other Matters’, is sponsored by Rep. Emeka Chinedu Martins (PDP-Imo).

If the bill is passes, protesters is now a criminal offence which attract punishment of five years jail term.

The action of government in this regard can be term to amount to violations of Nigerians right as enshrined in constitution which gives the citizens fundamental rights to peaceful protests is about to be violated by the attempt criminalization of such right.
