Police Assure Safety as Oworonshoki Youths Threaten to Block Third Mainland Bridge Over Lagos Demolition

Tension has heightened in Lagos as youths from the Oworonshoki area have threatened to stage a protest on the Third Mainland Bridge on Monday over the ongoing demolition of structures in the community’s waterfront area.

A notice circulated on social media on Sunday warned motorists and commuters to make alternative travel plans to avoid being caught in the protest.

“Please, for those who have planned to work tomorrow morning (Monday, 27th October, 2025), be informed that you should plan your route inward island and inward mainland because Oworonshoki youths are planning to lock down the THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE in respect to the protest against the demolition going on in the Oworonshoki community. Please be guided,” the message read.

Over the weekend, videos surfaced online showing residents of the Precious Seed community in Oworonshoki running for safety as teargas canisters were allegedly fired by security operatives who accompanied officials of the Lagos State Government during the demolition exercise.

The demolition, which reportedly affected several makeshift homes and business structures along the waterside, has sparked anger among residents who claim they were not given adequate notice or relocation support.

Reacting to the planned protest, the Lagos State Police Command has assured members of the public of their safety, stating that adequate personnel have been deployed to maintain peace and prevent any form of disruption along the Third Mainland Bridge and its environs.

In a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property while ensuring the free flow of traffic across the state.

“The Command is fully aware of the situation and has taken proactive measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order. We urge residents and commuters to go about their lawful activities without fear,” Adebisi stated.

She added that officers have been strategically positioned across Oworonshoki and adjoining areas to swiftly respond to any emergency or attempt to cause public disturbance.

Meanwhile, community leaders in Oworonshoki have appealed to the state government to suspend the demolition exercise and engage stakeholders in dialogue to prevent further unrest.
