Smartcash Redefines Digital Banking in Nigeria with Zero Charges on Transfers, Bills, and SMS Alerts
Smartcash Payment Service Bank (Smartcash PSB), a subsidiary of Airtel Nigeria, has announced the introduction of Zero-Charges, an initiative that eliminates all fees on interbank transfers, bill payments, and SMS notifications.
The move, described as the first of its kind in Nigeria’s digital banking space, is aimed at reducing financial barriers and promoting broader access to affordable financial services across the country.
Speaking during the unveiling of the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of Smartcash PSB, Tunde Kuponiyi, said the development was part of the bank’s strategy to ease financial pressure on households and small businesses while driving financial inclusion nationwide.
“This is more than just a pricing adjustment; it is a revolution in how Nigerians experience digital banking,” Kuponiyi said. “By removing fees across transfers, bill payments, and SMS alerts, we are putting customers at the center of financial innovation and inclusiveness. This initiative not only reduces costs for families and businesses but also opens the door for millions of unbanked Nigerians to confidently embrace digital finance without the fear of hidden charges.”
Kuponiyi noted that millions of Nigerians depend on digital platforms for daily financial transactions, adding that Smartcash’s zero-charge model reinforces its commitment to affordability and accessibility.
He explained that the initiative aligns with Airtel Nigeria’s broader mission of transforming lives through innovation and technology-driven financial inclusion.
“At Smartcash, we believe technology and financial services should empower, not limit. The launch of Zero-Charges underscores our commitment to enabling a more inclusive, accessible, and affordable financial ecosystem for Nigerians,” he said.
Industry observers say the move could set a new benchmark for Nigeria’s financial services sector, potentially reshaping customer expectations and influencing how digital banks and fintechs compete in the market.
With the removal of all charges on transactions and notifications, Smartcash PSB appears set to strengthen its position as a customer-focused digital bank committed to transparency, trust, and innovation.
