Irene Wangari Mingongo

According to information shared by the commanding officer, Officer Irene Wangari Mingongo committed suicide by shooting herself at around 9:45 a.m.

Police officer Peter Muigai Njoroge, a colleague who was in his house when the incident happened heard the noise coming from Irene’s house. She responded quickly and raised an alarm.

After carrying out investigations, it was established that Irene had shot herself using a Steyr rifle which she had been given to her yesterday, as she was preparing to report to work today, Friday.

Her lifeless body was found facing upward.

Crime scene officers established that Migongo shot herself in the chest, dying on the spot.

The rifle, with 19 rounds, was recovered for further administrative action.

Police are yet to establish what led to the incident as her colleagues have said the deceased has never portrayed any signs of stress.

“The only message she posted yesterday (Thursday) at 8:26 pm on her mobile status read, “Because tomorrow may never be mine”, accompanied by the song ‘Sweet bye bye’,” police added.

Colleagues revealed that Irene had updated her Whatsapp status, and she had written “Because tomorrow may never be mine” she said.

Migongo’s body has since been moved to Kenyatta University funeral home.
