The leader of the Yoruba Welfare Group, Comrade Adegoke Alawuje has warned politicians, traditional chiefs and religious leaders to stop pleading for suspects in the county whenever suspected criminals are arrested, about to be or being prosecuted.

Comrade Alawuje said this while commenting on the recent criminal assault on a Saki-born but an Ibadan-based legal practitioner, Bar Waheed Lawal in Ilua Saki by Mr . Kilani Ajani Azeez Omofoyewa, the Baale of Ilua, Saki in Oyo State.

YWG insist the traditional ruler of Ilua must be punished. if he and his cohorts believe they can use the proceeds of illegal mining to intimidate and silence his innocent subjects and perceived agents of liberation in his locality, Yoruba Welfare Group is ready to take up the challenge and end the impunity by making sure that they pay dearly for the jungle justice, which Barrister W O Lawal was subjected to. All those held liable must not go scot-free.

When the palace of Baale of Ilua, a small town in Shaki, became a court of law, where anyone can be judged by the Baale and prosecuted by the palace thugs, they will explain tire.

Kudos to the police authorities on the journey so far. We expect that they will make sure that justice is well served at the end of the day.

In his words “How can some criminals attack a person and you will be pleading with the victims not to seek justice? Assuming you are the victim or your relation is the victim, will you easily give up and allow the perpetrators of criminal acts to go scot-free?”

He stated further, that if we continued to plead for criminal suspects when they attack innocent people or arrogate the power of police or judiciary to themselves as Kilani Ajani Azeez Omofoyewa did to Barr Lawal, then the Yoruba ethos of omoluabi being torn into pieces and our palaces will lose respect and credibility they deserve.”

The mandate of the Yoruba Welfare Group is about the preservation of the respect for cultural identities and values of Yoruba and the welfare of Yoruba sons and daughters wherever they are. Any act that is contrary to the Yoruba Culture of Omoluabi must be condemned. We will not only protect Yoruba against criminal acts committed by non-Yorubas if a Yoruba man is unjustly treated and criminally attacked by fellow Yoruba, but our group shall also fight for such victim” Alawuje stated.

If a Yoruba man is attacked and his welfare is threatened, even by members of his family or religious group Yoruba Welfare Group shall fight unless the victims consent to his unjust and criminal treatment by such members of his family in which case, such a victim looses our protection and support.

Re: Justice for Barr Abdul Waheed O. Lawal

*I urge all Yoruba both at home and in the diaspora that if our family members and even children committed criminal offences we should not shield or plead for them. It riots against Yoruba Culture and Omoluabi to be pleading for criminals. When a crime is committed, whether by Oba, Baale, Religious or Community leaders or even Politicians, let the law take its cause for sanity to be restored and sustained in our society.*

Ogbeni Adegoke Alawuje is the national president of the Yoruba Welfare Group.
